My first experience working on a podcast was as a producer for Houston Public Media’s Below the Waterlines podcast. It’s about how Houston was (and is) recovering from Hurricane Harvey. I had pitched the idea to HPM (and other outlets) but not gotten a response. So I started producing the podcast on my own. Independent of my pitch, the HPM enterprise team started to plan their Hurricane Harvey podcast. One of the reporters, Katie Watkins, that I had reached out to on LinkedIn eventually did reply to say they were interested in working with me. I met with her editor, we decided I’d help out as a contractor, and the rest is Murrow-award winning history. I actually didn’t do much direct audio work on this podcast–mainly research, fact checking, and pitching, drafting, and editing episodes. I loved every minute working with the HPM reporters. I did eventually get to do audio work with the same group of folks when HPM hired me to produce a new investigative podcast series.
